Excerpt
“How much do you know?” he suddenly asked. There was intensity in his expression now, a determination.
I pulled my hand away and felt my brows furrow. “I don’t understand.”
“When did you turn?” he pressed again, quirking an eyebrow.
I stared. I had no idea what he was talking about. Worst of all, I was terrified to ask.
My silence hung so thick in the air I felt I could grasp it. “Your father never told you anything?”
Taking my continued silence as an answer, he released a dark, dangerous laugh.
A laugh that held secrets. About me. And I was the only one left in the dark.

Personally, I love a good tale with magic and mystery so it should come as no surprise that I really enjoyed this story. Lewter does a fantastic job at creating a mystery right at the start of the story. It had me hooked right away and just waiting for the reveal to happen. The clues were there and it was up to me to put things together.
It was also refreshing to see a character struggling with powers she didn’t know she had – or even wanted. Nowadays I read a lot of stories where the main character comes into their powers and *poof* they’ve mastered them and everything that comes with them. So many characters don’t struggle with the changes that they’re going through, just accepting them as part of life. Abby certainly wasn’t going to accept the changes in her life without question!
I also really enjoyed the struggle that others characters went through in this story. How do you know when to keep things to yourself and when to share what you know with the people you care about? How do you know if you’ve gone too far – or not far enough?
These characters felt real, like they had real struggles. That’s the kind of story that I like to find myself lost in. It also doesn’t hurt that Urban Fantasy is one of my favourite genres of all time.
